Dove by Paisley Hope: Quickie Review

The quick verdict

Dark, intense and packed with protective biker energy. I loved Sean and Layla together, especially the way their relationship builds from tension and distrust into something fierce, loyal and very hard to put down.

The rundown

Layla Monroe has spent her life in Harmony, Georgia hiding how much she craves something darker. When her parents are killed under suspicious circumstances, Sean “Ax” Hunter — sergeant at arms for the Hounds of Hell MC and former marine — gives her a way in. Finding the truth means getting close to Ax, and getting close to Ax means everything gets complicated fast. This is book two in the Soldiers of Bedlam series.

Real talk

Ax is the kind of fictional man who ruins you for realistic expectations, and I say that as a compliment. From the moment he fixates on Layla, you understand exactly why this is a dark romance — he does not do casual, he does not do patient, and he absolutely does not share. Layla holds her own against him though, which is what makes them work as a couple rather than just as a fantasy. My one honest note is that the middle third dipped for me — the pacing eased off right when I wanted it to push forward — but the beginning and ending more than made up for it. If you are new to MC romance, this is a great entry point. If you are already deep in the genre, Ax will feel like an upgrade.

Group chat verdict

This is one of those books where I finished it and immediately wanted to recommend Ax to everyone, while also reminding them that he is very much a fictional recommendation.

I came for the motorcycle-club romance and stayed because Sean and Layla genuinely made me care about them as a couple. I only wish the middle had kept the same pace as the beginning and ending, because I was having far too much fun everywhere else.

Comfort level

Dove is a dark motorcycle-club romance featuring violence, grief, stalking, abuse, trauma, possessive relationship dynamics and dark sexual themes. Check the author’s trigger warnings before reading to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
