The quick verdict
I’ll admit it. I went into Boo’d Up completely blind, expecting a sweet little Halloween romance in a neighbourhood.
Then I met Jamal. Apparently the maintenance service included a few things I hadn’t budgeted for. 🤣
I was hooked. The opening caught me completely off guard with how much heat arrived so fast, but the romance kept me reading through the quieter middle. Four and a half stars, two chillies, and a supporting cast who all deserve a shout-out.
The rundown
Samira has an arrangement with Jamal, the maintenance man in her complex. Something breaks, she calls him, and let’s just say she gets very excited about household repairs.
But Jamal wants more than another maintenance call. With Halloween approaching, he starts planning a scavenger hunt with personal clues and little gifts, hoping to show her he’s been paying attention.

They’ve got the physical side sorted. Talking about feelings? That might need a separate work order.
Real talk
Chapter one happened so fast I barely had time to collect a character description. A lion tattoo, a dirty mouth, “look at me”, and somehow the sink was fixed as well. Excellent. Very thorough service.

The Mr Fix-It thing absolutely worked for me. The capable hands, the deep voice, the confidence. Yes, thank you. But finding out he wanted more made Jamal even more appealing.
The scavenger hunt was lovely because the gifts were personal. Her favourite candy. Coffee from the place she likes. A blanket that matches her cushions. He’s noticed the little things, and that was what got me. I was enjoying Samira getting excited while knowing exactly who was behind it.

He did have me feeling for her when he suddenly went all business during a repair visit. Sir, these are some very mixed signals. Understanding his nerves softened that for me, though, and the romance was worth following.

And the supporting characters. All of them need their moment. Miss Jenkins had me from her cheeky little joke about being too old for him. Leslie gives Jamal absolutely no peace, and Mashonda sees straight through Samira. They’re funny, supportive and very happy to tell these two what they need to hear. They made the neighbourhood feel alive.
I really hope there’s more to come from this little world. I’d happily spend longer with these characters.

- Returning to the plumbing afterwards like this was a perfectly ordinary call-out.

- Him wanting to be the man she calls even when nothing needs fixing.

Read this if…
You want a quick Halloween romance with humour, sweetness and some explicit heat. Especially if a capable man getting soft over someone, thoughtful little gestures and a lively supporting cast sound like your thing.
If you’re after constant spice, the middle is much quieter than the opening suggests. I would happily have taken more heat, but the romance carried that part for me. By the time the heat returned, the emotional connection made it even better.

Group chat verdict
I thought I was getting a sweet neighbourhood Halloween romance. Nobody warned me that chapter one was going to require a moment to recover before I could remember what anyone looked like. 🤣
Then Jamal started remembering her favourite things, and I was just as interested in the little gifts as I had been in the tattoos. The romance carried the less-spicy middle, the supporting characters were amazing, and I loved the quiet way it finished. I just wanted longer with them.
Four and a half stars and two chillies. I loved this book. I’d happily read more about this neighbourhood, although I would now have very different expectations of the maintenance department.

Comfort-level note
This is an adult romance with explicit sexual scenes and strong language. Two chillies is my rating for the book overall, not a promise of closed-door content. The story also includes anonymous gifts and a casual arrangement between a resident and her maintenance worker. Check the author’s available content guidance if needed.
Final vibe
Came for a sweet Halloween romance. Got distracted by the maintenance man. Stayed for the romance and everyone else’s commentary.
