No Bones About It by Cassandra Elizzabeth: Quickie Review

Tori smiles up at twelve-foot Mr. Bonejangles in a vampire cape outside her autumn-decorated ranch house.

The quick verdict

Hallmark with smut. That is the best way I can describe No Bones About It, and I mean that very affectionately.

I haven’t read a lot of sentient-object romance, and I went into this thinking I probably wouldn’t like it. A twelve-foot skeleton boyfriend? I had questions. By the end, I was invested in his happiness and smiling at how beautifully the story wrapped up.

Four stars and three and a half chillies. There is more plot than spice, but when Cassandra Elizzabeth brings the heat, she absolutely delivers.

The rundown

Tori Graves is newly divorced and finally free to celebrate Halloween exactly how she wants. First purchase? The enormous skeleton her ex never wanted her to have.

Tori checks a rib while assembling the enormous white plastic skeleton in her autumn yard.
Some assembly required. Feelings apparently included.

Mr. Bonejangles, BJ for short, gets outfits, accessories and a very enthusiastic welcome to the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, Lois from the Autumn Acres homeowners’ association is considerably less excited about his arrival.

Then there are the suspicious movements. The LED winks. The growing possibility that Tori’s favourite decoration has opinions of his own.

Especially about Lois.

Real talk

The first couple of chapters gave me cosy small-town romance vibes, a little like the feeling I get from Laurie Gilmore’s Dream Harbor books. A fresh start, autumn atmosphere, neighbourhood drama and a woman finally doing something for herself. I liked Tori straight away and wanted her to enjoy every second of it.

Tori, a curvy woman in her forties with long brown hair, smiles in her garage doorway.
Finally doing Halloween her way.

Then chapter three happened. There was a bottle incident. The Hallmark channel would have cut to an ad break considerably earlier.

It was mostly funny and surprisingly hot, and that sudden shift made me laugh even more. But the cosy feeling never really disappeared. As I kept reading, “Hallmark with smut sprinkled throughout” became my running description. Eventually, sprinkle felt a little inadequate.

The HOA drama was enjoyably ridiculous, and Lois was someone I loved to hate. One of my favourite lines was her threat: “I’ll get you Tori, and your big skeleton, too.”

The Wicked Witch of Autumn Acres had spoken. Meanwhile, BJ had suspiciously moved and was giving the finger in her direction. Apparently he had already formed an opinion of the neighbourhood management.

And then we meet the Spooky Bitches. Their name alone made me laugh.

Tori is welcomed by five adult Halloween supporters in black shirts while BJ towers in the yard behind them.
The neighbourhood has a support group. Lois will be thrilled.

What surprised me most was how sweet Tori and BJ were together. His LED eyes turn into hearts. His enormous hands are gentle with her. He makes their little nest with pillows and blankets, and they spend time tucked away in the tent, with rain outside and horror films to watch together.

Tori sits in a blanket nest between BJ's long skeletal legs with a laptop while rain falls outside the tent.
Rain outside. Horror films and a cosy nest inside.

I went in wondering how a skeleton romance was going to work. Somewhere between the winks, the outfits and the cosy movie nights, I started genuinely caring about these two.

BJ's LED eyes glow with red hearts as Tori smiles up at him and holds his enormous skeletal hand.
He wears his heart in his eyes.

The pace felt right throughout. I was happily turning pages for the humour, the neighbourhood nonsense and the relationship, as well as the spice. There was a story I wanted to follow, and I thought the creativity was amazing.

Tori and kneeling BJ carve pumpkins on a newspaper-covered table inside their warmly decorated tent.
A little pumpkin carving with Mr. Bonejangles.

I won’t spoil the ending, but it affected me far more than I expected. The epilogue left me so happy. It was a beautiful conclusion, and I finished with a smile.

The No Bones About It cover appears intact on a black Kindle beside a glowing pumpkin and cosy tent blankets.
Hallmark with smut, ready for one more chapter.

Read this if…

You want cosy Halloween romance with ridiculous humour, genuine sweetness and hot scenes that make themselves count. If you are curious about sentient-object romance but suspect it might not be for you, I was right there with you. This surprised me in the best way.

I’d also recommend it if you want a quick, creative change from your usual romance. Just go in knowing it has more plot than spice. I enjoyed that balance, but if you want constant heat, that isn’t what I’m describing here.

Group chat verdict

I thought I probably wouldn’t like the skeleton book. Then I was laughing at him giving the HOA lady the finger, enjoying his little LED-heart eyes and getting invested in his movie nights with Tori.

It’s Hallmark with smut, and the smut is hotter than I expected. More plot than spice, but the author really makes those scenes count. I loved the creativity, I cared about them, and the ending left me smiling. Four stars, three and a half chillies. Very happy I gave Mr. Bonejangles a chance.

Comfort-level note

This is an adult romance with explicit sexual content, solo play, creative nonhuman anatomy, divorce, harassment, bullying and emotional distress. Check the author’s full content warnings in the book before reading. Some warnings include plot spoilers.

Final vibe

Hallmark with smut, LED-heart eyes and a twelve-foot skeleton I ended up genuinely caring about.
