Saturday Night Sip, Snack & Smut: The Weekly Reading Ritual

A Saturday night reading setup on a purple velvet throw: a chilli-salt-rimmed margarita, a plate of dark chocolate bark, a mug, candlelight and an e-reader showing a dragon on the cover.

Saturday Night Sip, Snack & Smut is my standing Saturday-evening ritual: one drink, one snack, and whatever book has made several questionable decisions on my behalf that week. Then I hand it over to you. This page is the home base for it, updated every week with the current pairing, so you always have somewhere real to land when a Saturday post sends you here.

How it works

Every Saturday I pick one drink from Bookish Sips and one snack or bake from Bookish Bakes or Bookish Bites, paired to whatever reading mood is running that week, plus a book prompt. Then it is an open call: tell me what you are sipping, snacking on and reading in the comments, or tag me in a photo of your own setup. Kindle under a blanket with half a packet of biscuits absolutely counts. The best ones get reposted to Stories during the week.

Reading something dark or high-intensity this week? Check the trigger warnings and your own comfort level before you pick it up. Full recipe index, including everything below, lives on Taste the Tropes: Bookish Recipes for Your Next Read.

This week’s pairing

Updated weekly, most recent pairing first.

Saturday 10 October: Ideally Positioned Reading Night

An Ideally Positioned reading night: a pink cocktail, a mocktail and peri-peri chicken sliders beside a Kindle

Sip: The Open House, Elira Hope’s official cocktail for the book, vanilla vodka, Chambord, cranberry and lime in a chilled coupe with a half sugar rim and three raspberries. The full recipe is in the Ideally Positioned reading night feature, credited to Elira with her permission. Not drinking? Second Viewing is my own alcohol-free raspberry lime mocktail with cranberry and vanilla. Snack: Gorgeous Garbo Sliders, charred peri-peri chicken thigh and peri-peri lime mayo on toasted mini brioche, inspired by Davo’s Chapter 1 lunch order. Read: Ideally Positioned by Elira Hope, a debut contemporary Australian romance set in Sydney, where a luxury property agent meets a council garbage worker. I am still reading, so there is no verdict yet and Tristan remains Under Review.

A note on the read: Ideally Positioned is an adult romance with explicit content as well as heavier themes including coercive control, blackmail, assault, addiction themes and violence. Check Elira’s content note before deciding whether it is within your comfort level. Elira Hope reached out to me about her debut and supplied information for unpaid editorial coverage.

Why these go together: everything came from the story. Elira made the cocktail, I made the mocktail and the sliders, and the sliders came straight from a Chapter 1 collision between Evie’s linen napkins and Davo’s Oporto order. Read the full Ideally Positioned reading night or start with the Book News article.

Evie brought the open-home polish. Davo brought the burger. I brought snacks.

Saturday 3 October: Slaycation Finale Edition

A funnel cake on a brass plate beside a French 75, a dish of blackberries, car keys and a road map, with fairground lights behind

Sip: Last Stop French 75, gin, lemon, a little sugar and a top of dry sparkling, in a glass cold enough to make an ordinary Saturday look like an occasion. There is a Blackberry French 75 variation on the post that pours deep purple, which is the one I made for this. Full alcohol-free version included. Snack: Slaughter Park Funnel Cake, batter poured into hot oil in loops, fried for two minutes and buried in an indefensible quantity of icing sugar. Blackberry sauce and funnel cake bites are both on the post. Read: Sinners Reunion by Lauren Biel, the final main book in the Slaycation series, which puts Josie and King in a car together five years after he disappeared on her.

A note on the read: Sinners Reunion is dark romance with substantial content warnings. These include childhood sexual abuse as trauma history, non-consent and dubious consent, gore, murder, attempted suicide and animal abuse mentioned. Please check Lauren Biel’s full warnings before reading and make sure the book suits your comfort level.

Why these two go together: five books of this series have systematically ruined a pineapple, a turkey leg, a champagne bottle and an entire deep fryer for me. The champagne is the Ship Happens callback and the funnel cake is the Slaughter Park one. Both posts link the whole run if you want the full evidence board.

Five books. One last road trip. The food has been through enough.

Saturday 26 September: Double Life Night

An amaretto sour beside a plate of golden arancini, one broken open with the cheese pulling, and a small bowl of marinara

Sip: All the Lies Amaretto Sour, amaretto with a measure of bourbon behind it, fresh lemon and a thick foam cap. It arrives looking like the sweetest thing on the table and finishes sharp, which is why it is named for book four. Aquafaba option for anyone avoiding raw egg, and a full alcohol-free version. Snack: Double Life Arancini, cold risotto rolled around a cube of mozzarella, crumbed and fried until the shell shatters and the middle pulls. Baked and air fryer methods included. Read: the Mindf*ck series by S.T. Abby, five short books about a woman running two entirely separate lives while the FBI profiler beside her looks in the wrong direction.

A note on the read: this one is very dark, and not in a teasing way. The series contains sexual assault, graphic violence, torture and revenge killing, and the assault is central to the story rather than incidental. Check S.T. Abby’s own content warnings and your own comfort level before you start it. My spice level guide covers spice, not this, which is why the warning is written out properly.

Why these two go together: both of them hide something. More practically, a sour is exactly what you want beside anything fried, because sharp citrus cuts straight through the richness and resets your mouth for the next one.

A drink that is not what it looks like and a snack that is not what it looks like, for a book about a woman who is neither.

Saturday 19 September: War Council Night

A copper mug of Moscow mule beside a platter of glazed smoked chicken wings and lime wedges, with candles and mountains behind.

Sip: Illyrian Storm Mule, vodka, a whole lime and properly fiery ginger beer over big ice in a frosted copper mug, with two slices of bruised fresh ginger doing the real work. Cold in your hand and hot at the back of the throat. Full alcohol-free version included and it loses nothing. Snack: Illyrian Wings, smoked low for an hour then blasted hot so the skin actually crisps, tossed at the last second in a hot honey, lime and ginger glaze. Full oven and air fryer methods included for anyone without a smoker. Read: A Court of Wings and Ruin on GraphicAudio, book three, which is where the series stops being a romance with a war in the background and becomes a war with a romance in it.

A note on the read: ACOTAR gets considerably spicier and more violent from book two onward, and book three has a war in it with the losses that implies. My romantasy starter guide covers the reading order if you are working out where to begin.

Why these two go together: the ginger and lime in the glaze and the ginger and lime in the glass are doing the same job from opposite directions. The drink cuts straight through the fat and the chilli, which is the whole reason this pairing works on the plate and not just on the page.

A book called A Court of Wings and Ruin, and a plate of wings. Some weeks the pairing writes itself.

Saturday 12 September: ACOTAR Reread Night

Three violet gin fizzes on a silver tray beside a berry-topped pavlova and an e-reader, with a moonlit city behind.

Sip: City of Starlight Gin Fizz, gin over cold butterfly pea tea so it pours a deep midnight indigo, then turns violet the moment the lemon goes in, with a drift of edible shimmer through it. You hand the glass over with the lemon in a separate jug and let them do it themselves. Full alcohol-free version included, and it genuinely loses nothing. Snack: Starlight Pavlova, a crisp white shell with a marshmallow middle, piled with blackberries, blueberries and dark cherries and dusted with edible silver so it reads as a night sky instead of a Christmas dessert. Read: A Court of Mist and Fury on GraphicAudio, full cast and score, which is the book where the Night Court takes over and the whole series opens out.

A note on the read: ACOTAR starts as fairly tame high fantasy and gets considerably spicier from book two onward, with real violence alongside it. If you are new to it, my romantasy starter guide covers where to begin.

A drink that changes colour in your hand and a dessert covered in silver. It is a lot of shimmer for one table, and that is exactly the right amount for Velaris.

Saturday 5 September: Spring Court Afternoon

A jug of white sangria with three filled glasses and a platter of pressed flower shortbread on a sunny garden table.

Sip: Spring Court Faerie Wine, a white sangria with pear, white peach, grapes, lemon and elderflower, steeped for a few hours and topped with soda, with edible flowers floated on at the last minute. Pale, floral, and it empties considerably faster than you plan for. Full alcohol-free version included. Snack: Pressed Flower Shortbread, buttery and properly sandy, with real flowers pressed face down into the dough before baking so they come out suspended in the surface. Six ingredients and no decorating skill required. Read: A Court of Thorns and Roses on GraphicAudio, full cast and score, which is where the whole series starts and where the Spring Court is at its most unsettlingly beautiful.

A note on the read: book one is the tamest of the ACOTAR series by a wide margin and gets considerably spicier and more violent from book two onward, so do not judge the rest by where it starts. My romantasy starter guide covers the reading order.

One thing to check first: both halves of this pairing use real edible flowers, so buy the ones sold to be eaten rather than cutting from the garden or a florist, since ornamental flowers are routinely sprayed. Both recipes list the common toxic ones to avoid.

An entire court stuck in permanent bloom, a jug in the shade, and a biscuit with a pansy in it. Spring in Brisbane finally being good for something.

Saturday 22 August: Dark Academia Night

Two hot toddies beside a Wax Seal Baked Brie, an e-reader and headphones on a candlelit table.

Sip: Say Nothing Hot Toddy, whisky, honey and lemon in a warmed mug with a clove-studded lemon wheel and a cinnamon stick, full alcohol-free version included. Snack: Wax Seal Baked Brie, a whole wheel wrapped in puff pastry with fig jam, walnuts and thyme, stamped on top like a wax seal and served molten. Read: Speak by Ruby M Darling, book one of the Rayne-Moore University duet, dark academia with a secret society running underneath it, or whatever winter book has quietly taken over your evenings.

A note on the read: Speak is a dark why choose romance carrying significant content warnings, including sexual trauma in the backstory and consent that is deliberately murky throughout. Check Ruby M Darling’s own content warnings and your own comfort level before you start it.

Warm mug in one hand, molten cheese in the other, nobody speaking. What are you sipping, snacking on and reading tonight? Drop your combination below, or add a photo of your Saturday-night reading setup.

Saturday 15 August: Hockey Romance Night

Three Puck Bunny Pink Lemonades beside a tray of loaded nachos, books and candlelight.

Sip: Puck Bunny Pink Lemonade, a sugar-rimmed pink lemonade cocktail with a dark blackberry ice puck that bleeds down through the glass while you read, full mocktail version included. Snack: Rink-Side Loaded Nachos, sheet pan nachos layered twice so nobody gets bare chips at the bottom, served with three dips because ranking them was never the point. Read: Pucking Wild by Emily Rath, book two in the Jacksonville Rays series and exactly where I am right now, or start at the beginning with Pucking Around, my full review is there.

Pink in the glass, three dips on the table, and a hockey series where the whole point is that nobody has to choose. What are you sipping, snacking on and reading tonight? Drop your combination below, or add a photo of your Saturday-night reading setup.

Saturday 1 August: Sugar Life Finale Night

Baby Girl Sugar Fizz coupes beside a plate of Good Girl, Brat Baby truffles and a stack of dark romance books

Sip: Baby Girl Sugar Fizz, a pink sugar-rimmed champagne cocktail with four fruit garnishes on the pick, one for each book in the series, full mocktail version included. Snack: Good Girl, Brat Baby Truffles, two-tone no-bake chocolate truffles with a soft white chocolate Good Girl side and a cayenne-spiked, salt-finished Brat Baby side, because picking one was never the assignment. Read: Baby Girl by Harley Madison, the Sugar Life finale, or whatever why choose romance is currently refusing to let you sleep.

Pink in the glass, two kinds of chocolate on the board, and a series finale I am still not entirely over. What are you sipping, snacking on and reading tonight? Drop your combination below, or add a photo of your Saturday-night reading setup.

Saturday 25 July: MC Romance Night

Smoky roadhouse pretzel bites served beside an Outlaw King whiskey sour

Sip: Outlaw King Whiskey Sour, smoky bourbon, charred orange twist and a curl of cinnamon smoke, full mocktail version included. Snack: Smoky Roadhouse Pretzel Bites with Whiskey Mustard Dip, warm soft pretzel bites dusted with smoked paprika, alcohol-free dip swap included. Read: Foxx by Paisley Hope (Soldiers of Bedlam #3), or whatever motorcycle club or dark romance currently has you rereading the same page.

Amber in the glass, smoke on the pretzels, one book you are entirely too invested in.

Ready-made pairings for other reading moods

If this week’s theme is not your mood, here are other pairings already sitting in the archive, ready whenever the ritual swings back their way.

Romantasy Night

Hands reaching across a candlelit table for Dragon's Fire Margaritas with chilli-salt rims, around a slate board of Dragon Scale Bark scattered with dried mango and toasted coconut.

Sip: Dragon’s Fire Margarita (spicy mango, chilli-salt rim, full mocktail version included). Snack: Dragon Scale Bark, a no-bake dark chocolate bark with dried mango, chilli and toasted coconut scales, built to actually match the drink rather than just sit next to it. Read: whatever dragon-riding, fae-court romantasy currently has your whole personality, see my romantasy starter pack if you need a place to start.

Dark Romance Reading Night

A Masked Man Espresso Martini in a coupe with a dark sugar rim, three coffee beans on the foam and a blood orange twist, beside a masquerade mask and a lit candle.
Masked Men Espresso Martini

Sip: Blueberry Blackout Cocktail or the Masked Man Espresso Martini, both with mocktail versions. Snack: Dark Chocolate Blueberry Bark. Read: anything from my dark romance starter pack. All three recipes already reference each other as a dark-romance-night spread, so this trio was basically built for this ritual.

Cosy Dream Harbor Night

An iced cinnamon latte on a wooden table by a window looking out over a coastal town, with an open book, a plate of cinnamon sugar cookies and a knitted blanket.
Iced Cinnamon Latte and Cinnamon Sugar Cookies

Sip: Iced Cinnamon Latte or Mulled Wine (with an apple cider mocktail option). Snack: Cinnamon Sugar Cookies or Gingerbread Eggnog. Read: the Dream Harbor series, in order or out of it.
