Two spicy Halloween novellas. Two cocktails. Two deliciously wicked treats. And one Saturday night that is absolutely not suitable for the family group chat.
Tricks, Treats & Terrible Decisions
Right, my bookish besties. I’ve made some Halloween plans.
And, as usual, they involve cocktails, snacks and fictional situations that would probably concern anyone who accidentally looked at my Kindle.
Welcome to a special Halloween edition of Saturday Night Sip, Snack & Smut.
Now, normally I pick a book, create a delicious drink inspired by it, throw in something equally delicious to eat, and call that a perfectly acceptable Saturday night.
But it’s Halloween.
And apparently I have absolutely no self-control when it comes to themed reading nights.
So this week, I’m doubling everything.
Two books. Two cocktails. Two snacks. Twice the questionable reading material.
And because I love a theme, I’m calling this one Tricks, Treats & Terrible Decisions.
I’ve picked two very different Halloween novellas, and honestly, the contrast between them is half the fun.
On one side, we’ve got Hallowpeen by Holly Wilde.
An outrageous paranormal novella involving occult rituals, sentient pumpkins and some extremely questionable romantic possibilities.
Yes. Pumpkins.
On the other side, we’ve got Scream for Us by Molly Doyle.
Three masked men, one Halloween party, dangerous flirting and the sort of fictional decisions that should probably come with their own warning siren.
One is ridiculous in the most outrageous way possible.
The other is considerably darker, with a whole different set of red flags.
And I’ve created a drink and snack pairing for each.
Because if I’m going to spend Saturday night reading something wildly inappropriate, I might as well have something delicious within reach.
Here’s What’s on the Halloween Menu
The Pumpkin Situation

- The Book: Hallowpeen by Holly Wilde
- The Sip: Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini
- The Alcohol-Free Sip: Pumpkin Spice After Dark
- The Snack: Halloween Lolly-Loaded Blondies
- The Vibe: Pumpkin spice, orange fairy lights and laughing at the sheer audacity of what you’re reading.
The Masked Men Situation
- The Book: Scream for Us by Molly Doyle
- The Sip: Poison Apple Martini
- The Alcohol-Free Sip: The Antidote
- The Snack: Bloody Red Velvet Brownies
- The Vibe: Red lighting, dark romance, questionable fictional men and a very strong recommendation to check the content warnings.
Pick your favourite.
Try both if you’re feeling ambitious.
Or just make the food and admire the fact that somebody thought combining pumpkins and romance was a perfectly reasonable publishing decision.
I’m not here to judge.
Have you seen my Kindle library?
A Little Warning Before the Bad Decisions Begin
I love a spicy Halloween read as much as the next person with questionable fictional taste, but these two books are definitely not your typical cosy autumn romances.
And they’re very different kinds of intense.
Hallowpeen is unconventional adult paranormal erotica involving sentient objects and highly sexualised themes. It’s deliberately bizarre, so please check the book listing and make sure that sort of content is within your comfort zone. Detailed warnings may not be available.
Scream for Us is a much darker read, with content warnings that include violence, attempted sexual assault and intense sexual themes.
Please look through the full warnings before picking either book.
There’s a big difference between enjoying fictional red flags and being comfortable with everything a dark romance might contain.
And there’s absolutely no shame in deciding a particular book isn’t for you.
Right. Warnings covered.
Let’s talk about the snacks.
And the cocktails.
And the pumpkins.
Unfortunately.

For When You Want Your Halloween Reading to Make Absolutely No Sense

Paranormal erotica | Halloween novella | Approximately 113 Kindle pages
I knew Hallowpeen was going to be ridiculous.
I just didn’t realise quite how far down the pumpkin patch we were going.
Here’s the general situation.
We’ve got a small town where Halloween is supposedly the night when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.
Sounds atmospheric, right?
Maybe a little spooky. A few supernatural happenings. Some mysterious local legends.
Then someone gets involved in an occult ritual.
And the pumpkins become… involved.
Romantically.
I’m going to leave that right there.
Because some things really do need to be experienced firsthand, preferably without anyone looking over your shoulder.
What makes this such a perfect Halloween novelty read is just how completely committed it is to its own absurdity.
It’s not pretending to be a sweet, wholesome pumpkin-patch romance.
It knows exactly what it’s doing.
And apparently I decided this was a perfectly good reason to create an entire pumpkin-inspired cocktail and dessert pairing.
Honestly, I stand by that decision.
The Sip: Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini

Here’s where I decided to bring a little sophistication to an otherwise deeply unserious situation.
My Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini is rich, cold, beautifully coffee-forward and flavoured with homemade pumpkin spice syrup.
Think cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, a little caramel sweetness and that gorgeous creamy espresso martini foam.
It looks classy.
It tastes amazing.
And nobody looking at your cocktail would ever suspect what you’re reading.
Not drinking? I’ve also included Pumpkin Spice After Dark, a creamy alcohol-free version with the same warming spices and coffee goodness.
Because everyone deserves a good reading-night drink.
Get the Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini recipe, including the mocktail.
The Snack: Halloween Lolly-Loaded Blondies

Naturally, I needed something just as ridiculous to eat.
Enter my Halloween Lolly-Loaded Blondies.
Buttery, chewy brown sugar blondies filled with white chocolate and covered in colourful Halloween lollies.
Basically, imagine your trick-or-treat haul collided with a baking tin.
And somehow the result was delicious.
They’re sweet, soft in the middle, wonderfully chewy and completely unapologetic about how much chocolate they contain.
I even added little pumpkin decorations.
Which felt innocent at the time.
Now I’m not so sure.
The sweetness of the blondies works beautifully with the slightly bitter coffee flavour of the espresso martini, so this isn’t just a pairing based on a very questionable pumpkin joke.
Although, admittedly, that’s a large part of it.

The Reading-Night Vibe
If you’re choosing this half of the Halloween double feature, here’s what I’d recommend.
Get your comfiest blanket, turn on some warm orange fairy lights, grab your Kindle and make sure your cocktail is within reach.
Add a plate of blondies.
Maybe a few little Halloween pumpkins for decoration.
Actually, on second thought, perhaps don’t make eye contact with the pumpkins.
Just enjoy your drink.
And prepare to question absolutely everything.
Book Two: Scream for Us by Molly Doyle

Three Masked Men. One Halloween Party. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Dark romance | Halloween novella | Approximately 81 Kindle pages | High spice
Now we’re changing the mood.
Quite dramatically, actually.
We’ve gone from colourful lollies and pumpkin nonsense to dark rooms, red lighting and three masked men who are definitely not giving off wholesome small-town-boyfriend energy.
Welcome to Scream for Us by Molly Doyle.
This short Halloween dark romance follows Quinn, a self-described good girl who finds herself at a legendary Halloween party.
And, because apparently one mysterious masked man wasn’t enough, she becomes involved in a dangerous game with three of them.
Three.
I mean, at some point you have to admire the ambition.
Quinn has one condition.
Everything ends at dawn.
Which sounds wonderfully sensible in theory.
Unfortunately, fictional men and sensible boundaries don’t always make particularly good companions.
Especially in dark romance.
This is a completely different reading experience from Hallowpeen.
We’re talking a darker atmosphere, dangerous attraction, intense themes and some seriously questionable fictional behaviour.
And I do mean check those content warnings.
For this pairing, I’m featuring the original short novella, not the later Final Cut bind-up.
Now, naturally, a book with three masked men and a dangerous Halloween party needed something a little darker than pumpkin spice.
So I went with poison apples.
Because subtlety has apparently left the building.
The Sip: Poison Apple Martini

Tell me this isn’t the perfect Halloween cocktail name.
My Poison Apple Martini is tart, crisp and just a little wicked.
It’s got that gorgeous sour apple flavour, a fresh hit of lemon and a blood-red sugar rim that makes the whole thing look like it belongs at a very glamorous but potentially suspicious Halloween party.
Beautiful.
Delicious.
Possibly cursed.
Exactly what I was going for.
Not drinking alcohol? There’s also The Antidote, a sparkling alcohol-free apple version with the same tart flavour and dramatic red rim.
All the Halloween atmosphere without the booze.
Get the Poison Apple Martini and alcohol-free Antidote recipes.
The Snack: Bloody Red Velvet Brownies

And because a tart apple cocktail deserves something rich and chocolatey alongside it, I’ve paired this book with my Bloody Red Velvet Brownies.
Deep red, fudgy brownies with a white chocolate drip and a dramatic raspberry drizzle.
They look a little sinister.
They taste absolutely delicious.
And they’re probably the prettiest thing you’ll find anywhere near this particular Halloween reading situation.
The rich chocolate balances the sharpness of the apple martini beautifully, while the red velvet and raspberry give the whole pairing that dark, dramatic Halloween feel.
Honestly, I’m a little obsessed with how these two look together.
Get the Bloody Red Velvet Brownies recipe.
The Reading-Night Vibe
This is where the cosy orange lights go off.
And the red lights come on.
I’m picturing black candles, a dark blanket, a Poison Apple Martini sitting beside the Kindle and a plate of red velvet brownies within reach.
Maybe some atmospheric Halloween music before you start reading.
And definitely no unexpected visitors.
Because I don’t need someone knocking on the door halfway through a dark Halloween novella and sending my cocktail flying across the lounge room.
Headphones recommended. Comfort levels checked.
Now you’re ready.
Two Books, Four Recipes and One Very Questionable Saturday Night

You know what I love most about this Halloween double feature?
The fact that these two reading nights could not be more different.
On one side, there’s pumpkin spice, colourful lollies and paranormal ridiculousness.
On the other, there’s sour apple, blood-red brownies and masked men with more red flags than a Halloween sale at the costume shop.
And somehow, both feel perfectly at home in Sip, Snack & Smut.
Because that’s the fun of pairing food and drinks with books.
I’m not just picking a random cocktail and calling it a day.
I want the flavours, colours and atmosphere to feel like they belong to the story.
For Hallowpeen, that means playful pumpkin spice, sweet treats and a sense of humour.
For Scream for Us, it’s tart apples, dark chocolate, deep reds and a much moodier Halloween setup.
Same Saturday night.
Two very different moods.
And I genuinely can’t decide which table I’d rather be sitting at.
Probably whichever one has the fullest cocktail glass.
How I’d Set Up the Ultimate Halloween Reading Night

If you’re planning to do the full double feature, I’ve got one very important piece of advice.
Do as much as possible before you open your Kindle.
Because once I’m comfortable, snacks are within reach and I’ve found a good book, the chances of me voluntarily getting up to wash a saucepan are incredibly slim.
Here’s how I’d organise it.
The Day Before
Make the pumpkin spice syrup for your espresso martinis.
Prepare the raspberry drizzle for your Bloody Red Velvet Brownies.
Get your ingredients together and make sure you’ve got plenty of ice.
You could even set up your Halloween decorations.
Nothing complicated. A few candles, fairy lights and a nice cosy reading spot are more than enough.
Earlier on Saturday
Bake your Halloween Lolly-Loaded Blondies and Bloody Red Velvet Brownies.
Give both plenty of time to cool before slicing.
Prepare the components of your Poison Apple Martini and chill whatever needs chilling.
And, most importantly, make sure your Kindle is charged.
I refuse to have a perfectly good reading night ruined by a 2% battery warning.
When It’s Time to Read
Now you get to choose your adventure.
Option One: The Pumpkin Patch
- Hallowpeen by Holly Wilde
- Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini or Pumpkin Spice After Dark
- Halloween Lolly-Loaded Blondies
- Warm orange lighting
- A very open mind
Option Two: After Dark
- Scream for Us by Molly Doyle
- Poison Apple Martini or The Antidote
- Bloody Red Velvet Brownies
- Deep red lighting
- Content warnings checked and headphones nearby
Option Three: The Full Double Feature
Start with the pumpkins.
Have a laugh.
Enjoy your blondies.
Take a break, switch the lighting, grab your brownies and move on to something considerably darker.
And remember, there’s absolutely no rule saying you have to finish both books in one night.
This isn’t homework.
It’s an excuse to make something delicious, curl up with a book and enjoy a little Halloween atmosphere.
Where to Find the Books
Both featured novellas can be found on Amazon:
- Hallowpeen by Holly Wilde
- Scream for Us by Molly Doyle (the original novella)
Just make sure you check the edition and content information before purchasing or downloading.
Neither book is required reading for enjoying the recipes, either.
If you’ve already got a Halloween romance sitting on your TBR, I fully support making the cocktails and snacks anyway.
I’m certainly not going to tell you that you need another excuse to eat brownies.
Coming Next Saturday: Halloween After Dark
Oh, and before you think I’m finished with Halloween…
Absolutely not.
On Saturday 31 October, things are getting even darker.
The next Sip, Snack & Smut Halloween feature is inspired by Myers by Zepphora, a slasher-inspired Halloween retelling.
And the menu?

A black cherry cocktail and a dark chocolate graveyard cheesecake.
Because apparently I looked at this week’s two questionable reading choices and thought, you know what this needs? More Halloween.
I’ll share the full Myers reading-night pairing as part of the Halloween finale.
Let’s just say we’re ending spooky season with considerably less pumpkin spice and a lot more darkness.
The Last Sip (And Probably One More Blondie)

So there you have it.
My Halloween double feature.
Two spicy novellas, two cocktails, two alcohol-free alternatives and two desserts that absolutely deserve a place at your next Halloween reading night.
One book might make you question the existence of sentient pumpkins.
The other might make you question your fictional taste in men.
And honestly?
That’s a fairly normal Saturday night around here.
Whether you’re in the mood for ridiculous paranormal smut, darker masked-man romance, or just a delicious cocktail and a plate of brownies, there’s something here for you.
Make the drink.
Grab the snacks.
Charge the Kindle.
Check the content warnings.
And enjoy your Halloween reading night.
Now, I need my bookish besties to settle something.
Which Halloween reading-night table are you choosing?

🎃 Team Pumpkin Spice: Espresso martinis, lolly-loaded blondies and a book that has absolutely no business making pumpkins this suspicious.
🍎 Team Poison Apple: Tart cocktails, blood-red brownies and three masked men who are probably not going to improve your fictional dating standards.
Or are you going all in and doing the double feature?
Because I feel like there are some very questionable reading decisions about to be made, and I would LOVE to hear about them.
And if you enjoyed this little Halloween adventure, you’ll find plenty more book-inspired drinks, delicious treats and questionable reading recommendations in my Saturday Night Sip, Snack & Smut series.
Good books. Delicious drinks. Excellent snacks.
Questionable fictional decisions entirely optional.
Inspired by Hallowpeen by Holly Wilde and Scream for Us by Molly Doyle. These recipes and reading-night pairings are independent EmberSas creations, not official collaborations or sponsored content. Both books are intended for adult readers aged 18 and over. Always check content warnings before reading.
Shop the Spooky Reading Mood
The reading-night menu is sorted. Here are a few things from my EmberSas shop for a Kindle case and bookshelf with equally questionable Halloween plans.

For fictional standards beyond human: My Here for the Monster Smut Kindle Insert pairs cream and hot-pink lettering with tentacles, claws, horns, wings and gothic roses. A little paranormal reading confession for your clear Kindle case.

For a little spice on the shelf: My Spicy Heart Sign is a physical 3D-printed bookish decoration with customisable colours. The Kindle can keep the chapters; the bookshelf can make the confession.
The Kindle inserts are printable digital downloads with PDF and PNG files. No physical insert, case or device is included. Shelf signs are physical items. Check the individual product pages for sizing, options and care instructions.
