Pumpkin Smash by Darva Green: Quickie Review

Isabelle in her white-trimmed latte costume beside the lantern-carrying pumpkin-headed phantom in an autumn cornfield.

The quick verdict

Apparently the phantom of Grayville is fictional boyfriend material. I need to talk about this. And the vines.

Pumpkin Smash by Darva Green had me hooked from the bonfire ghost story, and by the time I finished, the scary cornfield legend had become fictional boyfriend material.

I loved this book. The spice delivered, I got attached to them as a couple, and the cosy little moments made me fall for him even more. A hot Halloween quickie with unexpected sweetness is exactly how I’d describe it.

The rundown

Isabelle is trying to move on after a bad breakup. She’s at a Halloween bonfire with her friends, dressed as a sexy pumpkin spice latte, listening to Grayville’s most famous ghost story.

Brown-haired Isabelle in her handmade latte costume holds cider beside a Halloween bonfire.
A sexy pumpkin spice latte and a very questionable midnight plan.

The legend says a phantom haunts the cornfield after sundown. Get caught, and he’ll steal your soul. There are stories about a witch, a curse and bodies found years ago. Exactly the sort of conversation you want before walking home in the dark.

Then she heads off to a secret midnight date in a pumpkin patch.

Girl. A deserted pumpkin patch, next to the haunted cornfield? At midnight?

I was questioning her choice of meeting spot, but the whole setup had me eager to keep reading. Her plans go wrong, she ends up in the cornfield, and suddenly the phantom is considerably more than a bonfire story.

Isabelle looks back through the moonlit corn towards a pumpkin-headed figure carrying a lantern.
A midnight meeting spot with some drawbacks.

Real talk

I liked Isabelle straight away. I was rooting for her to have a good night and enjoy her fresh start. Her handmade pumpkin spice latte costume was fun too, complete with a little white cloak for the extra foam.

The opening had that tense horror-film feeling I love, and the pace kept me turning pages. It moves quickly, but that worked for me in a short story.

And the phantom? He made quite the entrance. A lantern, a wide-brimmed hat and a pumpkin face glowing in the dark. With that voice carrying through the cornfield, I could understand why the town had stories about him.

The pumpkin-headed phantom stands among tall dry corn holding a glowing lantern.
Grayville has stories about him.

The legend was what hooked me in the first place. I loved the mystery and that tense horror-film setup, then found myself getting attached to the very man everyone was warning her about.

He’s intimidating, protective, and very interested in whether someone has hurt her. He had my attention.

Then he started looking after her, and I was gone.

The pumpkin-headed phantom gently cleans Isabelle's foot with a warm washcloth while she sits fully clothed on the kitchen counter.
Then he started looking after her.

Keeping her warm. Tending her feet. Making her apple cider while she sits in his kitchen wearing his black shirt. That last one is such a lovely little image, and apparently I am very susceptible to a fictional man making a hot drink.

His shirt. Hot apple cider. I was sold.

The blanket cuddles under the stars got me too. Those quieter moments made this feel like a romance I was invested in. I wanted more for these two than one night.

Apparently the phantom does cosy too.

The spice, though. My chapter-five reading update was literally: 🥵🥵🔥🔥🌶️🌶️

That should give you some idea.

The vines deserve a mention of their own. Wrist restraints and hair pulling, with him calling her “my queen”? Yes, those went straight onto my list. Add his praise, patience and attention to what she wants, and the whole combination worked for me.

For my taste, the story and spice balance was exactly right for a short spicy read. I finished happy, attached to the couple and very pleased with my choice of Halloween reading.

The tiny details that did the damage

  • A chase through the cornfield. Very questionable Halloween plans. Excellent reading material.
  • Vine restraints. Specifically the wrists. These absolutely need to be on the list.
  • Vine-assisted hair pulling. The phantom has options.
  • “My queen.” A pet name that worked very nicely for me.
  • Wearing his black shirt. Always worth noting.
  • He makes her a hot drink. The apple cider in the kitchen deserves its moment.

You want a hot Halloween quickie with unexpected sweetness. There is plenty of spice, but the care, praise and cosy moments gave me a couple to get attached to as well.

Group chat verdict

The town warns you that the phantom will steal your soul if he catches you in the cornfield. Then he’s calling her his queen, looking after her and making her apple cider while she’s wearing his shirt. I loved this book. Four and a half stars, four chillies, and yes, the vine restraints are getting their own mention.

Comfort-level note

For adult readers. The book includes explicit sexual content, restraints, strong language, breakup and cheating references, historical murders, and an ex with stalker tendencies. Check the author’s content warnings before reading.

Final verdict

I was hooked by the cornfield legend, thoroughly distracted by the vines, and completely sold by the phantom making her apple cider. Pumpkin Smash gave me the heat I wanted and a couple I actually cared about. I’d happily recommend this one for a spicy Halloween read. The phantom of Grayville is officially fictional boyfriend material.
