Slash or Smash by Dee Garcia: Quickie Review

Raven, a plus-size woman with brown waves and curtain bangs, smiles at two large escape-room staff wearing Ghostface and Jason masks.

The quick verdict

She has a mask kink. There’s a Ghostface behind the escape-room counter and a Jason ready to join him. Suddenly, the puzzles are looking considerably less important.

Slash or Smash took until around halfway through to get to the spice for me, but when it did, it was hot AF. Four chillies very well earned. 🥵

I gave it 3.75 stars. I enjoyed Raven, the Halloween atmosphere and the chemistry, but I wanted the heat to arrive sooner and a little more from the ending. A fun, spicy little read that left me wanting a bit extra.

The rundown

Raven loves Halloween, but the usual party circuit isn’t doing much for her this year. She and her friends decide to try The Lock Box, the new escape room in Hollow’s Moor.

Five adult friends in bat, Red Riding Hood, Poison Ivy, Lara Croft and Morticia costumes walk through a warmly decorated Halloween street.

Their chosen experience is the Haunted Mansion. The men greeting them are wearing Ghostface and Jason masks. Raven has already established that masked men are a weakness.

Excellent news for her. Potentially less useful for staying focused on clues.

This is a short adult Halloween novella with MMF heat, a gothic escape-room setting and a heroine whose night out becomes rather more interesting than the party she left.

Real talk

I wasn’t instantly hooked. At first, I was curious and still settling in, with the Halloween atmosphere doing most of the work. The costumes, the decorated streets, the girls heading out together. It felt properly seasonal.

Raven helped. I found her relatable, and I loved her confidence. She’s a plus-size woman in her thirties who knows what she likes, and her reaction to the men at the counter made me laugh. The escape room caught my interest. The masked men also had my attention. Obviously.

The attraction worked from that first meeting, but I needed a bit more before deciding how I felt about the chemistry. Once things got going, that definitely improved. The dynamic between all three delivered, and I enjoyed Raven getting to live out the fantasy she’d already admitted to having.

The masks staying on were a highlight. So was ‘little bird’. Add the masked head tilt, that sense of being watched when she can’t even see his eyes, and the praise and little moments of reassurance, and there was plenty here that worked for me.

I just wanted it to start sooner. There was enough setup for a short Halloween read, but I would happily have traded a little of that wait for more time with the characters afterwards.

Once the heat arrived, though, it had my attention so thoroughly that I forgot her friends were still doing the escape room. Apparently I also needed someone to keep track of the group. 😂

The ending was fun and fitting, with a funny moment that became my favourite bit. I’m leaving that one for you to discover. I liked the finish; I just wasn’t quite ready to leave them there.

The tiny details that did the damage

  • His voice getting her attention before she properly looks at him.
  • The masked head tilt. Such a small movement. Such effective nonsense.
  • Feeling his gaze when she can’t see his eyes.
  • The masks staying on.
  • ‘Little bird’. Yes, that one worked on me.
  • Praise and little moments of reassurance.
  • Raven getting to live out her masked-man fantasy.

Read this if…

You want a quick Halloween read with masked men, MMF chemistry and plenty of heat once it gets going. I’d recommend it for the seasonal atmosphere and the fantasy, especially if you want something short between longer books.

If you want spice from the opening pages or a more developed ending, you might share my wish for a little extra. Check the content notes too. This has a threatening setup and taboo elements, even though I enjoyed how they worked within the fantasy.

Group chat verdict

The spice didn’t start happening until halfway through, but when it did it was hot AF. I liked Raven’s confidence, the Halloween setting and the chemistry between all three. The masks stayed on, ‘little bird’ happened, and somewhere in there I completely forgot she had arrived with friends.

I wanted the heat sooner and more from the ending, but I had fun. 3.75 stars, four chillies, and a solid little Halloween option if masked men and MMF are what you’re after.

Comfort-level note

For adults. Contains explicit MMF and MM sexual content, sexual contact between stepbrothers who are not blood-related, threats, knife intimidation, coercion/dubious consent, restraint, choking, slapping and degrading language. There is also brief fat-phobic behaviour directed at Raven. Choose according to your comfort level.

Final vibe

Halloween costumes, a mask kink and an escape-room booking that deserves your full attention.

A Little Decor for Your Next Distraction

The masks stayed on and my concentration did not. If your reading nook also needs to reflect those priorities, here are a few things from my EmberSas shop for your next Halloween reading night.

Spooky Season Spicy Chapters Kindle Insert

For dressing the Kindle for the occasion: My Spooky Season Spicy Chapters Kindle Insert brings reading ghosts, pumpkins, books and candles together with bold orange and pink lettering. Raven wore a bat costume. Your clear Kindle case can have a Halloween outfit too.

Why Choose Romance Kindle Insert

For more than one fictional distraction: My Why Choose Romance Kindle Insert brings a moody black, burgundy, blush and gold book-club design to your clear case. A fitting little nod to a reading night where one masked man was never going to be the whole story.

Good Girl Heart Sign

For the praise that worked on me: My Good Girl Heart Sign puts those two words on a heart-shaped shelf sign with raised lettering and customisable colours. Apparently the bookshelf would also like a compliment.

Dark Romance Recipe Bookmark

For your next questionable fictional decision: My Dark Romance Recipe Bookmark is a double-sided recipe-card design with a cheeky warning label on the back. Printed on cardstock, laminated and finished with rounded corners, it is ready to hold your place in the next paperback. Someone should keep track, because I forgot Raven had friends waiting.

The Kindle inserts are printable digital downloads with PDF and PNG files; no physical insert, case or device is included. The shelf sign and bookmark are physical items. These are mood-matching shop picks, not Slash or Smash merchandise. Check the individual product pages for sizing, options and care instructions.
